Manica Rubida Colony - European Red Ant

Scientific Name: Manica rubida
Common Name: European Red Ant

Description:
The Manica Rubida, also known as the European Red Ant, is an impressive ant species found in the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe, primarily at elevations between 500 and 2000 meters. This species is known for its vibrant red color and powerful defense mechanisms. Though small in size, they are extremely aggressive and fiercely protect their territory from intruders.

Manica Rubida is an aggressive species with a potent sting. They are known for defending their nest and their skill in hunting. Although they can be considered dangerous in the wild, they exhibit fascinating and complex behavior in captivity. They prefer sandy soil in riverbeds or gravel pits, where they build their nests in the moist and relatively cool underground. These ant colonies are polygyne, meaning multiple queens are present in a single colony.

Housing:
Manica Rubida requires a well-ventilated nest with a humid but not overly wet environment. The optimal nest temperature ranges between 20 – 24°C. They are challenging to keep due to their specific requirements and need a hibernation period to remain healthy. It is important to provide them with a cool environment during hibernation, gradually lowering the temperature.

Hibernation:
Yes, this species requires a hibernation period to survive and thrive. Make sure to keep them in a cool place during the winter months, preferably between 5 – 10°C, and reduce their food intake during this period.

Difficulty Level:
Difficult, this species is known to be a very challenging starter and is therefore more suited for experienced ant keepers.

Delivery Information:
We deliver healthy, active colonies with a queen, workers, and potentially brood. The colony is carefully packaged to minimize stress during transport. Each colony is ready to settle into its new nest.

With its unique traits and striking appearance, the Manica Rubida is an excellent addition to any ant collection. Don't miss the opportunity to own one of the most fascinating ant species in Europe!
